Ruger 10/22 Takedown Makeover

- [Voiceover] Welcome back to The Hank Strange SituationLifestyles of the Locked & Loaded.

(beatboxing music)- [Hank] Welcome back to the channel.

I'm Hank Strange.

Today we are talking .

22s, specificallythe 10/22 from Rugerand, even more specifically, the 10/22 Takedown.

So, I've had one of these before, and I wound up selling it.

It's a good rifle, I like it.

The 10/22's very popular, and so is the 10/22 Takedown.

But, you know, in the process of what I'm doing, you have toget rid of guns; and then sometimes you get the guns again.

So, here I am, recycling back around to the 10/22 Takedown, and this time I'm gonna make changes.

I'm pretty sure everyone's familiar with the 10/22 Takedown.

(metal scraping, clicking)Basically just put it together, twist it like that, and you're good to go.

Same thing to take it apart.

Make sure you've got thisthe bolt locked open, and then here's your Takedown andyou just pull it up like that and take it apart.

That is really convenient because, y'know, very small footprint there.

Now, I said to you that there's a few things I want tochange on this.

The first thing, let's start from the topThis 10/22 is the threaded barrel version.

You see this flash suppressor up there, very cool.

The first thing we're gonna do is actually take that offso that we can thread a suppressor on this bad boy.

The silencer I wanna mount on this, the suppressor,is the Sparrow from SilencerCo.

We're gonna unthread this so that we can mount that, then it will be nice and quiet, especially if we're usingsome subsonic .

22s, which I have some of those.

So that's the first thing that we're gonna do.

Finally got my Sparrow out of ATF Prison, so we're gonna beable to use that here, on the hacienda; that's a cool thing.

The next thing that I wanna do is to be able to puta Picatinny rail up here, y'know?A rail, so you can mount an optic.

That's really important to me.

The other thing that I wanna do with the 10/22 Takedown isand this goes for all the 10/22s, actually, the charging handle's on that side, so if you're charging, you either have to take your hands off or away fromthe trigger and charge like that,(clicks)or you gotta come over with the other hand.

Kind of like on the AK, y'know? And charge that way.

So we are gonna solve all these things.

And here's the optic that I'm gonna mount, actually.

This is from Primary Arms; it's the ACSS-22LR.

You should have seen this in another video;I know some people were complaining about my mount.

This is all deliberate.

I know; I do mess up and make mistakes, but this one wasdeliberate, okay?So I'm doing this for a reason.

I'll talk about that sometime later.

But this is the optic I wanna put on there, and the mountingmethod that I'm gonna go with is the ORCA.

This is from Blue Rooster, maker of gun accessoriesI'm gonna run something in there for you guys, and in the description you'll find a link to it.

This is called the ORCA or Opposite Reach Cocking Accessory.

Yeah!Y'know what? The thing about this, like I said to you,is that you gotta come over; it's kinda a little bitawkward toarticulate the bolt and all that kind of stuff.

Well, the ORCA allows you to switch that to the other side.

So you can still use that if you want to; but with yourother hand, you'll be able to cock it.

That's why it's called "Opposite Reach Cocking Accessory.

"The next thing we're gonna install is this Hogue OM Seriessoft rubber overmolded rifle stock, right? It's got the thumb hole, y'know?Personally, I'm thinking that's gonna help give mea better hold when I'm standing, you know, make it a little bit more stable; I like that.

Having the overmolded rubber here is gonna make itreally comfortable; and this is specifically designedfor the 10/22 Takedown; very cool, from Hogue.

We're gonna put that on.

Here's the instructions from Hogue on the back, for what you need to do.

It's pretty simple.

We are just gonna jump in there and install the overmolded10/22 Takedown rifle stock.

Let's start with the stock.

We're gonna need to bring inGonna need to bring these parts in.

Of course, everything's clear.

See that?Everything's clear here.

This is what we're gonna change:We're gonna change this to this.

The first thing we're gonna need to do hereis we're gonna need to remove that, right there.

This bolt is holding it in, so we're gonna take that out.

There we go.

Take that bolt out; we're gonna hold onto it becauseit's gonna go back in there.

Then now, to remove this, you've got totake your safety here and put it halfway, where it's like,it's not fully in safe and it's not full-on fire, kinda halfway.

And then you can liftthe action, there goes the action.

Got that? Here we go.

So now it's in here, right? So now the action's been moved over to the new stock.

Now we can put your safety back in a normal position.

And then you're just gonna re-install that bolt.

So that bolt's just gonna go back in here now.

There you go, that's that.

The action is in.

(clicking)Okay, that part's easy.

Let's move it off.

Now the next thing that we need to do is replace the forend.

Basically we've got two things we need to remove hereon the forend, right? We need to remove the barrel band, which is this.

It's got a barrel band; if it has one, you need toremove that.

And then there's a bolt there that needs to come out.

Let's take the barrel band out first.

Barrel band should be pretty easy; it's just a flat-headscrewdriver going in there.

Here we go, barrel band.

And then we wanna take this screw out, this bolt.

And there you go.

So that comes off.

So there's your original forend off, andnow you wanna go ahead and put these in, right? There we go; that's lining up there.

Tighten that.

Making sure that's nice and tight in there.

Now, the barrel band is not going to be needed any more,'cause this does not use the barrel band.

Okay, so there you go!This now should go back together.

(metal scraping, clicks)Easy-peasy.

Overmolded stock; yeah, I like that.

Feels way more comfortable.

(clicks charging handle noisily)(imitating pirate) Thar she goes! So, phase one of this plan is completed.

And if you wanna take it apart, you just lock itand then(metal scraping)there you go.

It's in two pieces.

The next thing now we're gonna do is we're gonna put onthe ORCA, the Opposite Reach Cocking Accessory that comesfrom Blue Rooster, andthat should really be a very easy thing.

This is the standard version; there's a single-pointand a standard version.

Okay, instructions are on the back here.

Pretty simple.

Basically, what we are going to do is,we're gonna take these out,and then put this over and.

y'know, replace 'em.

So let's just jump into that.

Okay, so the mounting screws that you needare in the bag, if you haven't already put it on.

The 10/22 Takedown does come with a scope base, and it's got screws in there; we haven't put ours on sowe went and found the bagto get our mounting screws that we need.

All right, there you go.

We're not using that.

I'm just gonna put these in here so that we've got them.

I'm just gonna start with oneand get that in position first.

Let's see, there we go.

I'm just gonna get that it, and then I'llbring in the other three.

Before I tighten it, I'll drop these three in.

Get them to set down in there, and then I'll tighten them.

Okay, go back over, make sure these are tight enough.

And one last one, there we go.

All right, so let's see how this works.

So when you pull the left-hand side charging handle back,it pulls on that.

So now let's just release that so we can test it here.

There we go, so the bolt grabs it and pulls it back for ya.

(charging handle clicks)Or you can just grab it from up here and pull it backif that;s what you wanna do, but now you got iton the proper side.

Very cool.

All righty! So, we are outside and ready to shoot once again.

First thing I wanna show you is thatin your Takedown bag, even with the Hogueovermolded stock installed, you can stillconceal.

You can still use the bag, I mean, it doesn't reallystop you from being able to use the bag, there you go.

You know, good to go.

It's a little bit more difficult to get this in and out, just because the soft rubber is gonna drag on there a littlebit, but that's not that big of a deal.

Now, if you're putting your optic on there, you're gonna have some problemsgettin' it in the bag, probably, because it adds more space.

But I just wanted to show you, you can easilymount an optic on there now, so we can go ahead and dothat if we wanted to.

I'm not gonna do it right now, because then I'm gonna haveto zero it, and all that kinda stuff, butjust to give you an idea of what's going on,you can easily throw an optic on there.

It's just gonna make it more difficult to get into that bag.

I will zero this later.

I'm definitely gonna come back andgive you guys an update of shooting it like this.

Right now, I just wanted to do a quick videoand show all this stuff working.

I'm gonna unlock this now.

(click)All right, and one last thing that we're gonna needto do to it is, uh.

If you noticed, I don't have my ear pro on,'cause we're gonna take this off.

So we're gonna take off the flash hider.

I just broke it so that it's hand-tight.

I'm gonna use the flash hider basically asa thread protector, for when I don't havea suppressor on there.

Okay, and.

Where's my suppressor? In the bag somewhere.

There we go.

Pull it out of the bag.

Okay, so,we'll just thread the Sparrow onto the end here.

There we go.

It's a go, nice and tight.

And, of course,I'm using the BX-25 from Ruger, best magazine to use for these things.

And, y'know what?Let's use some Aguila subsonic here, just to make itextra-super-mega-quiet.

And guess what I'm gonna do right now, that I couldn't do before?I'm gonna charge from over here!Ha, ha, ha! Nice!Let's shoot this, see how it is.

(gun fires quietly)(laughs) It's so quiet!(gun fires quietly, bullet rings off gong target)So you can tell the difference there, right?I'm shooting at the berm.

Here, I'll do it again; shoot at the berm.

(gun fires quietly three times)(laughs) I mean, the action is louderthan the sound that it's making.

Let's see if I can hit something now.

(gun fires quietly)(gun fires, rings off gong target)There we go.

(hits gong target three more times)(hits metal target quietly three times)(fires at berm four times)Yeah, definitely we need to put an optic on there.

(fires, strikes gong target five times out of six)Did I run out already?Yep.

Ran outa rounds already; that's fun.

But definitely we need an optic, becauseeven though it gets up over the suppressor,it's not up high enough for me to really makea good sight picture or anything like that.

I'm just shooting it to show you guys how quiet it is.

Okay, so let's just recap on what's goin' on herewith this 10/22 Takedown project:We have put on the Hogue overmolded stock for the Takedown;it gives you this very nice butt-pad here, gives you thisthumb-hole stock, obviously;it's got a real comfortable feel to it.

We've also got sling points added here in the stock andon the forend; that's very cool, I'm very happy with that.

Something I think is really awesome; let me unlock it.

There we go.

Is the ORCA, which is from Blue Rooster Gun Accessories.

I'll give you a link to that online.

So now you've got a charging handle that's basicallyopposite-reach charging handle, the ORCA;so you can actuate that charging handle from theopposite side of the gun.

I am really a big fan of that.

Very nice.

On the end, the easy thing to do was, because this isthe threaded barrel version of the 10/22 Takedown,we could throw on our Sparrow from SilencerCoand make this real quiet.

Very happy with that.

Obviously what we need to do is put an optic on thisbad boy, zero it, so that we could maybe be out heresniping squirrels or some other such pestilence, you know.

But that's very nice.

I'm gonna go out shooting at the berm.

Load it up.

The BX-25 again.

I'm gonna go out shooting at the berm so you guys can seehow awesome and quiet this is.

(fires quietly 25 times)(laughs)Oh, that's so much fun!Boy!Very nice, very nice.

Okay, you know what, as a little extra bonus,we put the scope on there, we haven't zeroed it;I just wanna see if it's on at all.

I'm gonna shoot at that orange circle plate I haveall the way out there, see if I hit anything.

(rifle cocking sound)(fires louder 15 times, striking gong target 13 times)Relatively on, and we haven't even zeroed it yet.

So, not bad.

And obviously we're not using subsonic anymore.

But that's pretty good, y'know?Very nice.

So there you go; that;s what this bad boy would look likewith the optic on it.

And sexier.

(beatboxing music).
