In January, Lynne Downeystarted a 28-day cleanse.
It included two shakes a dayand one small healthy meal.
We weren't allowed to have dairysoy, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, sugarvinegar and those are the big ones.
Lynne lasted three weeks and lost 5 poundsand says the process did improve her meal planning, but did nothing to boost her energylevels, the main reason she tried the cleanse in the first place.
Brennan Reurink did a 5-day juice onlycleanse just to try something new.
It led to a 14 pound weight loss, half of which she gained back the following week.
But it was like, holy and that kind of startled me a bit becausethat drastic of a change is not a good change.
Registed dietitianApril Thorimbert says because of the restrictive nature of many cleanses, weight loss is common but shortlived.
And many of the beneftspeople report are a placebo effect, as people are expecting a positive change.
There's really nothing in evidence and in what I can say in practice to suggest it leads to anythingof benefit from colon health to sustained long-term weight loss.
In fact, she says there are very real risks to consider, including headaches, fatigue, nutrient deficienciesand imbalances in the beneficial bacteria within the digestive system.
Anyone with a pre-existing condition including diabetes, heart failure, liver failure, anyone that is pregnant or breastfeedingwould be at higher risk of having some of those risk factors or complications.
Thorimbert says to forget the fads and stick to the basics: eat intact whole fruits and vegetables, intact whole grains, lean proteins and dairy and stay hydrated.
Make sure to couple that with at least 150 minutes of exerciseper week.
Neither Lynne or Brennan regret their experience but don't plan on doing another cleanse either.
At the end I didn't know why I was doing it anymore and so it didn't make sense to keep going.
You've got a liver that's going to detox you and you've got lungsthat are going to detox you.
You don't need a juice cleanseto do that.
