- In this video I'm talking about the disposablehearing aid battery that's supposed to give youtwo extra days of battery life.
The Rayovac Pro Line Advanced coming up!(upbeat music)Hi, guys, Cliff Olson, doctor of audiologyand founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem, Arizonaand on this channel I cover a bunch of hearing relatedinformation to help make you a better informed consumer.
So if you're into that consider hittingthe subscribe button.
Rayovac was perhaps the most well knownhearing aid battery brand in the marketrecently released their newPro Line Advanced hearing aid batteriesand I had the opportunity to sit down with a coupleof their engineers to get a non-marketingperspective of their new technologyand these are the seven things that I learned.
The first thing I learned about was the 2017 field study.
Basically Rayovac wanted to figure out iftheir new hearing aid battery technologyin the real world would perform betterthan their older battery technologyand so what they did is they took 100 different consumers, they gave them these different batterieswithout the consumers knowingwhich ones that they were gettingand they basically directly comparedthe amount of battery life with the newbatteries versus the old batteries.
And what they found is,is that these users when they were using the new technology, the new batteries from Rayovac they were gettingtwo extra days of battery life.
This is based on a size 312 battery.
The second thing I learned about was the chemistryinside of these batteries.
As it turns out zinc isn't the only thing thatis inside of a hearing aid battery and Rayovac, basically, they were able to find a differentmixture of chemistry not only to increasethe battery life within the battery, but also make sure thatthat battery operated more efficiently.
Think about it in terms of miles per gallon on your car.
If you have a more efficient vehicle you're gonnaget more miles per gallon.
So it isn't just about increasing the capacityof the battery in terms of battery life.
It's also making sure that when you're using all of thesedifferent accessories and Bluetoothand things like that when it really increasesthe drain from a battery.
If you have a battery that is better equippedto handle that increased demand of drain then you'regonna have a battery that performs better for longer.
The way they did this was by adding different alloysand electrolytes in order to increase the efficiencyby about 10%.
The third thing I learned about wasthe new battery cell designed.
By optimizing the internal structure of the batterythey were actually able to increase the amountof space they had by 8%.
When you think of this in terms of vehicles againit's like increasing the tank size for gasolineinside of your car.
When you have more space to work withyou can add more of these differentcompounds like zinc and alloys and electrolytesinside of the battery to increase the battery capacity.
The fourth thing I learned about what these newbatteries is the secure seal.
The better the seal that you have in a hearing aid batterythe more stable that battery iswhich makes it better at reducing the negative effectsof temperature and of moisture.
The fifth thing I learned about was their new packaging.
Their new packaging is pretty neat in termsof being very intuitive and easy to use.
Instead of batteries dispensing outof the back of the pack, they actually dispense out the front of the pack.
So if you just open this tab up, you drop them battery out,you close this have back up.
When you want to rotate to the next batterythere's a little ratchet system in the back.
It's very easy to use.
You just rotate it and it brings that next batteryinto the spot where you can dispense it.
You can even rip off this top tab.
Throw it in your pocket, throw it in your pursewhatever you need to do.
It is very portable.
The other thing about the packaging that is really niceis that they increase that sticker tabon the batteries and they're much easierto remove than the very tiny stickersthat I have from the old batteries.
So when you look in terms of can you functionwith these batteries? If you have finger dexterity issuesand you don't have a rechargeable hearing aidyou need to have a battery that is functionaland that Rayovac has really figured out that theyneed a larger tab on their batteries to makethis easier for people who need it.
The sixth thing I learned about was the costand this is something that I really grilledthe engineers on.
If they were to tell me that the cost increased30% and you're only getting 10% improvementin battery life and performanceit wouldn't really be worth it,but their data shows that you're actuallygetting a 15% improvements in performanceand battery life versus only an increasein 10% in the costand on top of that you're also gettingthe added features and bonusesof having a much nicer packaging.
And the seventh thing that I learned,is that milliamp hours is a fallacy in the marketplace.
Milliamp hour started with class A circuitrywhich held a very steady two milliamp drain, but efficiencies go down when milliamps go upand with the new hearing aid technology that'sout there now, with all the digital featuresthat they have in these devicesand all of the streaming capabilitiesthat you have in these devicesyou can fluctuate anywhere from two milliampsall the way up to 5 milliamps.
This means that if you have a battery thatis rated at 190 milliamp hoursif you actually fluctuate the milliamps that'sbeing drained from that battery that milliamp hourrating can actually drop significantly.
This means that you run into the potentialof having a 170 milliamp hour batterythat it's very efficient will outperform190 milliamp battery that isn't very efficient.
This just happens to be the reason why real Rayovacrefuses to play the milliamp hours gamewith other battery manufacturersbecause it is just a marketing tactic.
The bottom line is that you need to test multiple hearingaid batteries to find out which batterieswork best for your hearing aids.
Just make sure that the Rayovac Pro Line Advanced isone of them.
If you would like to try the new Rayovac Pro LineAdvanced hearing aid batteries I have them listedand linked in the description below.
That's it for this video.
