Vizio E Series 2018 TV Review - RTINGS.com

hi I'm Daniel from ratings comm todaywe're testing the Vizio e-series 2018it's a good 4k TV with lower input lagand a higher brightness than the 2017model but the image degrades when viewedat an angle and HDR support is mediocrewe bought the 65 inch eseries to testbut it's also available in a range ofsizes from 43 inches up to 75 inches weexpect these other sizes to a verysimilar picture quality but larger TVsdo tend to have more uniformity issuesthe number of local dimming zones doesvary a bit between different sizes butthis is unlikely to affect theperformance much we will talk about theresults of this later in the review youcan differentiate the 2018 II seriesfrom the other model years from the F inthe full model code first we'll look atthe design of the TV and then move on tothe picture quality we'll look at themotion handling and input lag and thencompared to these competing models whichare currently available the design ofthe e series is good the TV does feelvery plasticy with only a small metallictrim across the bottom edge like otherVizio TVs the stand is very wide so theTV does require a large table the standis also made of plastic but it does feelsturdy the large controls are locatedbehind the right-hand side of the TVthey're fairly basic but due to thelarge size they're easy to find the newsabove the controls are the inputs to theTV they're fairly easy to access even ifthe TV is placed close to a wall as theyare in set and directed parallel to theback unlike last year's eseries the 2018model has a tuner for those who arecutting the cordthere is no cable management so it canbe cluttered for those with many devicesthe borders of the TV are quite thickand are made of plastic looking at theTV through a thermal camera we can seethat it doesn't get very warm this isdue to the relatively low peakbrightness which we'll look at later nowwe'll move on to the picture colonywe'll be comparing twocurrently available TVs but competingmodels may change as new TVs arereleased for an updated comparison withnew models as we buy and test them seethe review page on our website which islinked below the Vizio e-series has ahigh native contrast ratio so blacksappear deep which is excellent it is inthe same ballpark as other va TVs likethe TCL six series and the higher endVizio m-series it is much better thanIPS tvs like the LG UK 6300 the E seriesalso has a full array local dimmingbacklight to produce deeper dark scenesbut unfortunately it doesn't work welldue to the limited number of zones thehigher-end Vizio m-series has more zonesand is more effective at local dimmingto improve the dark st.

performance butthere still isn't as good as the TCL sixseries which is a better choice for darkrooms note that the number of zones doesvary a bit between sizes 55 inches andsmaller have 10 zones while the 65 inchmodel we tested and the 70 inch modelhave 12 zones the largest 75 inch TV has16 zones due to the relatively smalldifference we don't expect theperformance between sizes to be verydifferent the E Series has a V a typepanel with bad viewing angles so thebest picture quality is reserved forthose who are directly in front of theTV for a wide seating a TV with an IPSpanel like the LG UK 6300 is a betterchoice as the colors remain moreaccurate the e theory's has a semi-glossfinish which is very good at diffusingreflections across the screen and shouldbe fine for most roomsbut in bright rooms the reflections maybe distracting unfortunately betterreflection handling is reserved forhigher-end TVs like the Sony X 850 F theSDR peak brightness of the E Series isOK with between 250 and 350 nitsdepending on the scene this is fine butmay not be enough to overcome glare inbright rooms in HDR the peak brightnessis about the same a real scene testpatterna peak brightness of about 300 netswhich isn't enough to make HDR highlightstand out and is worse than most otherHDR tvs the great uniformity of the 2018eseries is fun the edges do get darkerwhich can be distracting and there issome dirty screen effect visible due toirregularities near the center of thescreen this is in the same ballpark asthe M series and the lg UK 6300 unlikelast year's eseries the 2018 modeldoesn't support a wide color gamut so itcan't produce vivid HDR highlights thisis fine for watching SDR content butlimits the performance of HDR contentthe TCL six series does support a widecolor gamut so it may be a better choicefor those who want vivid colors in HDRthe response time of the e-series isfast which is very good as a resultthere's only a short blur trail behindfast-moving content and behind ourmoving logo some duplications may beseen in the trail which is due to thebacklight flicker at a high frequency of480 Hertz the e-series is also able toadjust the backlight flicker frequencywith the clear action feature it canflicker at 60 Hertz which makes mostcontent which is at 60 Hertz appearclear without much persistence blur itisn't without downsides though as thislow flicker frequency is very noticeableunlike most other TVs the e-series isable to activate this feature withoutdropping the brightness of the image theinput lag over the e-series is very lowin game mode it is about 22 millisecondsregardless of the resolution which isexcellent for those who plan to game onan Xbox one S or X or a ps4 Pro the ESeries uses the vizio smart castinterface the on-screen interface feelsquite slow to use and is limited to onlya handful of apps but the main draw ofthe smart platform is the great castingsupport the whole TV can be controlledfrom the Vizio app on Android or iOS anda huge variety of content can be castdirectly from a PC tabor phone the sound of the e-series ismediocreit may not be loud enough for a noisyenvironment and doesn't produce muchbass those who care about sound shouldlook for a sound bar or externalspeakers so overall the e-series 2018 isa good budget TV but is best suited to adark room with seating directly in frontor for gaming for other uses ordepending on your budget one of theseother TVs may be a better choice them-series 2018 is the step up in thevizio lineup it's a better TV with ahigher peak brightness and wide colorgamutit also has better local dimming toimprove dark scene performance the TCLsix series also offers better overallperformance it gets much brighter whichhelps HDR highlights to stand out or toovercome glare in a bright room it has awide color gamut and decent localdimming we've heard many reports ofsignificant uniformity issues though soyou may have to exchange the TV if youget unlucky the LG UK 6300 is an IPS TVwhich is better suited to a bright roomwith wide seating as the image remainsaccurate when viewed at an angle butblacks appear gray when viewed in a darkroom if you've got a bright room withwide seating then it is a better choicebut otherwise go with the E Series theNu 7100 is a budget model from Samsungthe Vizio is a better TV as it hasbetter motion handling with a fasterresponse time and has local dimmingalthough only with a limited number ofzones so that's it what do you think ofthe Vizio e-series 2018 let us know inthe comments below you can check out allof the measurements on our website andif you like this video subscribe to ourChannel or become a contributor thankyou for watching and see you next time.
