hey ch this is done from a leaf in thisvideo reviewing a variable temperaturekettles for tea in this video I'm goingto be telling you what I look out forwhen purchasing kettles and I'm going tobe reviewing three different productsthis video is going to go under the teawares playlist if at any point in timeyou enjoy this video then please givethe video the thumbs upthe more thumbs in the air the more teavideos are going to come your way and ifyou haven't subscribed to our YouTubechannel yet then go click that buttonbizarrely enough this is one of our mostrequested videos anybody who's watchedour mainly videos before will recognizethis guy here this is the cam show oftea 22a that we purchased in China andwe use it in most of our videos and weget a lot of questions about this kettleand how it works and how it functionsand if it's a good kettle so I thought Iwould broaden the scope a little bit andI would reach out to some manufacturersof variable temperature kettles and do abigger reviewso first up props to the manufacturersthat sent us kettles so we've gotRussell and Hobbes this is the Russelland Hobbes retro red kettle we've gotthe ice smarter 2.
0 kettle and we've gotthe sage tea maker kettle so as I saidwe reached out a lots of differentmanufacturers a few of them led us upthe garden path a little bit and we'vebeen hanging on to those kettles butthese guys came up trumps so a big thankyou to you guys this is not productplacement they did not send it for anyfavorable reviews or paying me anythingthis is an honest review of thesekettles and they kindly donated thesekettles for this review the other thingis I want to say we're not going to betalking about other ways of heating upwater today I'm not going to be talkingabout Tetsu then or cast iron tea whereand I'm not going to be talking alsoabout water I know a lot of you are keento get a water video out from us believeme I'm experimenting with tds meters pHmeters buying in bottled water we areworking on a water video every time Ihave a spare minute so we will get thatto you as soon as we possibly can todayI want to go through the things thatmaybe you should be looking out for whenselecting your kettle and I'm going tobe breaking down this review into eightparts I'm going to be looking at theprice of these kettles obviously thatof key importance the second thing I'mgoing to be looking for is the buildquality the third is the styling thefourth is the capacity the fifth is thespeed of brew the sixth is the actualtemperature control and how thetemperature control works on thesekettles the seventh is the ergonomicsthe brewing pleasure if you like of howthese work in a gongfu session andfinally the eighth is any other featuresthat I think you should be aware of sowe're going to go through those now andby the end of it we will pick a winnerfirst let's talk about price and thereason why I want to get this out of theway is because the rest of this reviewis going to be a comparative review soyou're going to be knowing thedifferences in features and my thoughtson the quality and it's always good foryou guys to know the price difference soyou can make a personal decision aboutwhether or not those differences areworth the difference in price so therussell and hobbes retro red is the mostaffordable out of these three productsthis retails at $79.
99 great britishpounds which works out at about ahundred US dollars the I smarter 2.
99 again pounds which equates toabout 125 u.
dollars the sage teamaker is a hundred and ninety-nineninety-nine which equates to about twohundred fifty dollars so this is doublethe price of this and this one is themost affordable it is worth noting forall of those raising their eyebrows thatthis one has extra features in it whereit's got a brewing chamber here whichlowers into the water and brews teawithin the kettle but I'm going to betalking about that at the end of thisvideo when we talk about other featuresfor the rest of this video it's going tobe a comparative on the use as a kettlejust as a variable use kettle but it'sworth you knowing about those extrafeatures from the beginning in caseyou're wondering this little guy overhere set us back sixty dollars in Chinaokay let's move on to build quality solet's take a closer look at theseproducts and look at the quality oftheir build I have to say first andforemost therekamme Joe is a really really simpleworkhorse kettle and it doesn't have thebest build quality it's a little biterratic when it boils you can certainlyhear it it's like rattling away so thelid is is making a lot of noise you knowit does what it should and it's reallyreally reliable but it's not the bestbuild quality and when you boil if youover boil water starts to splash overthe end of the spout if you overfill ityou know it's it's not refined in anyway the build quality is not great let'slook at these guys here the russell andhobbesremember the price difference guysthat's really really important theRussell Inhofe has good build quality Iwould say it's good it's not great letme try and bring this a bit closer we'regoing to get some nice close-up shots sothat you can see these kettles in theirfull glory but you know it's good it hasa nice handle which is it's got a goodweight about it my problem is this lidthis lid is made with metal which is abit too thin and it's a little bitratalie I don't particularly like thatbut apart from that the rest of the bodyis solid everything is solid the base issolid so it's pretty decent buildquality the eye smarter 2.
0 is greatbuild quality this is solid reallyreally solid we've been using this ingone through sessions and you know it'sit hasn't led us down the push buttoncontrol on here is really really niceyou know there's no rattle in it it'sreally really solid good solid metalcasing very good build qualitysimilarly the sage kettle here is veryvery good build quality really reallythick glass a nice solid base and a nicestrong handle they all have good handlesone thing that I look for in kettles isthat they're free of plastic as much aspossible you know heating water andplastic is not something that Ipersonally want to do and I seek toavoid that this is personal I knowthere's a lot of controversy aboutplastics and water and whether or notthey leech etc etcI personally prefer to avoid the wholediscussion by not having any plastics inmy kettle and that's where the Russelland Hobbes lets us down a little bitbecause it has a large plastic housingfor the temperature gauge and it alsohas three plastic tabs which you may beable to remove but it's got a fairamount of plastic in this russell andhobbes and that's something that isdefinitely a negative from my point ofview the smarter and the sage have noplastic within the body within withinthe chamber except for when you fill thekettle up the maximum level indicatorsmade out of plastic so as long as youdon't fill up to that point then thewater is not in contact with any plasticobviously the lid is plastic and youknow the pouring area has rid of plasticso you know you're not going to avoid itcompletely similarly the sage tea makerhas no plastic as long as you don't fillup to the topthis brewing chamber however with itfits in here and we're going to talkabout that later does have some plasticso that might be worth noting in caseyou're concerned about that it's veryvery difficult to find any kettles thathave no plastic at all except this guyhe may be cheap you may be simple butit's all stainless steel no plastic atall so that's definitely a plus thatgoes the way of the cam Jove anotherthing that I look out for with kettlesespecially because we're doing gongfubrewing and probably a lot of you doinggongfu brewing I like to have the kettleclose to me I like to have it by thecoffee table by the tea table and welike to have it very close by and so Ialways look for kettles that have cordsthat are quite long so I'm not having todrag out extension cables the rustle andHobbs is a bit shortsimilarly the ice smarter 2.
0 a bitshort you're going to be reaching you'reprobably going to need a extension cablethese guys here though the stage is abit longer the canto is definitely thelongestso cam jove wins on that onebut this this is pretty good obviouslyif you're not doing if you're not havingthe kettle right next to you when you'regoing through brewing and you're fillingup a thermos and this is just stationaryplugged into the kitchen then that's anirrelevance and the cord length doesn'treally matter okay that's my two centsworth let's move on to style visualaesthetics are obviously a matter oftaste but it is important that you likethe look of your kettle especially if itis part of a gongfu setup let's startover here the cam job is notparticularly the most stylish kettle inthe world in my opinionit has a charm it has a kind of Chineseauthentic charm to it you know it's ithas its own look but I wouldn't call itparticularly stylish the sage tea makerhere this has you know got I would sayan arresting quite striking look aboutit obviously it's the only kettle thatsee-through that's made of glass andthat adds a certain theater to your teabrewing as you watch the water heatingup you start to see the bubbles if youwant to get geeky about it then you canstart to guess the 10 the temperature ofthe water by the size the bubbles likethey do in China but you don't reallyneed to do that when you've got an LEDshowing you the temperature here but onething I think that they've kind of letthemselves down on a bit here is thelook of this base unit it's made out ofa plastic which is meant to look likemetal it looks a little bit cheap in myopinion especially for the price alsothe sound of this kettle when it reachestemperature I will let you hear thesound okay so that sound for me is fartoo loud and a little bit of true Civand doesn't really contribute nicely tothe Gong foo session but apart from thatI think the top of it looks pretty smartthe eye smarter 2.
0 I like the stolidI think this is a very simple veryminimal style obviously it's a differentlook to the other kettles and Iparticularly think that this is prettysmart and pretty neutral and will sitquite happily within any gongfu setup itmay not suit a traditional setup as muchbut it's a nice kettle and would suitmost environments the rustling havestyling is more traditional more retroit's called the retro read so if it'ssuited to your setup then great this isprobably going to really look good within certain setups it's very strikingnice color it doesn't have any sounds sothere's nothing to like or dislike onthat but you know the styling is nicethe the retro look is nice it's notparticularly to my taste there are a fewthings that I would change on it likethis quite tinny looking emblem here Ithink that that either shouldn't bethere or it should be made in the samemetal as the lid but you know these aresmall points overall it's quite astriking design and quite a strikingstyle and may well look good within yoursetupokay next capacity depending on yourgongfu setup you may be looking for akettle with a larger water capacity sothat you're not having to rush back andforth to the kitchen tap too much thisrustle and hobbes retro read has a onepoint seven liter capacity which ispretty big the eye smarter 2.
0 has a 1.
8liter so slightly larger and it's thebiggest capacity compared with all ofthe kettles here this the sage tea makerhas a 1.
5 liter so slightly less butstill a pretty big capacity and thislittle can drove has only a liter and ifyou fill it up more than liter it willlet you know about it because it's goingto spurt water out of the spout sothey're all all of these three haverelatively large capacities I have tosay whilst using this in are gonethrough sessions I have loved the largercapacities of these guys here it hasmeant that we don't have to go back andforth to the kitchen too often and ithas just made thegone through sessions a little biteasier but as I said they're allrelatively large capacity okay how fastdo they heat up water you don't want tobe waiting too long for your water to beheating up so I filled up each of thesekettles with one liter of cold water andtimed how long it took for them to bringthe water to the boil Russell and Hobbsthe manufacturers of this retro redkettle proudly announced that thiskettle will bring one cup of cold waterto boil in 55 seconds and I have to saythey were not lying this kettle was thefastest heating kettle it took twominutes and nine seconds for this kettleto bring one liter of cold water to theboil the I smarter 2.
0 was in secondplace not too far behind this was 2minutes and 18 seconds so just about 10seconds difference between the two not ahuge differencethe sage tea maker took 3 minutes 31seconds so nearly a minute and a halflonger to bring one liter to the boilwhich is a fair amount of time to waitthe cam Jove this little cam drove heretook 4 minutes and 19 seconds 4 minutesand 19 seconds to bring the ball and nowI know why our YouTube videos are solong rightmoving on to temperature control this isprobably the most fundamental factor forall UT heads because all of you knowthat controlling the temperature of yourwater is paramount to mastering andexperimenting with tea brewing I've donevideos about this before I'll put linksin the description below and a card willpop up here it's worth noting right offthe bat that the sage tea maker and theI smarter 2.
0 R kettles where you canset the temperature and walk away and itwill bring the water to that temperaturethe cam Joe and the Russell and Hobbsyou turn them on and you have to bearound to turn them off otherwise theywill just go to boiling point so that'sa key key difference here these are moreconvenient because you can set thetemperature and let it do its businessthe way that you set the temperature onthe ice mater isyou use an app so you have an app whichyou download which connects wirelesslyto the eye smarter and you can controlthe temperature I had no problemssetting up this app I think it will workso even the worst technophobes is notdifficult to set it up over wireless andit works very very wellit communicates very very well with thekettle and it's got a nice display veryvery simple for you to set thetemperature you can look at the capacityof the water and so you can see how muchwater is in the kettle and you canchoose to keep the water at temperatureso we will hold water at the temperaturethat you want so it's very veryconvenient it works very well it makesfor a very sleek design because you'reusing all of the controls on your phoneobviously the problem with that is thatif you don't have your phone on you oryour phone has run out of juice then youhave no way of controlling temperatureor seeing what the temperature is of thewater inside you only have one box onebutton at the base of the kettle whichbasically acts as an on/off and bringsit to boiling point so that's a downsidebut it is very very sleek and works veryvery well and I have to say it's reallynice when you're sitting you know notnext to your kettle to just say oh let'sbrew some more tea hit start and yourkettle makes a nice sound and it startsbrewing to the temperature that you wantso that's really really good but youneed your phone on you the sage teamaker it's all done at the front there'slots of buttons here to control thetemperature you can control thetemperature increments by five degreesthis one is to the one degree Celsiusthis is to five degrees so this isobviously a little bit more accuratethan this one but this one is very verygood as well so you can set it and thenwalk away and it will bring the water upto temperature in terms of theaccuracies of these they were bothpretty accurate this one was moreaccurate the probe was measuring plus orminus one degree I was measuring withthe temperature probe the waters plus orminus one degree canthe reading on the phone app obviouslybecause these are only in five degreeincrements this has got a larger roomfor error and this I found was aboutplus or minus three degrees this has akeep warm function as well so you canbring the water to the temperature andit will hold it so both of these if youwere sitting brewing green tea you couldsay wanted it 75 degrees 165 degreesFahrenheit you could set it walk away itwould bring it to temperature and thenit would hold it at that temperature foryour gongfu session that's somethingthat you may be looking for one thing Ihave to say the differences betweenthese two is that this one tends toovershoot its temperature so if you set80 degrees it tends to overshoot it by afair amount about 10 degrees and then itbrings it back down and then it holds itbut it tends to overshoot thetemperature a little bit this onehowever it may heat up more slowly butit stops the heating unit at the righttime to bring it to the temperaturethat's it about one disadvantage of thesage tea brewer here is that you cannotsee that live temperature unless thekettle is heating so just by lifting upand putting it back down it doesn't showyou on the led the live temperaturethat's a bit of a shame it only does itif it's in heating mode whereas this youcan look at your phone and you canalways see a live temperature okay sothat deals with these two let's talkabout the Russell and Hobbs this has ananalogue display here on the outside soone of the great things about this isthat you can always see the temperatureand that's live so that's good theanalog display is a stylistic thing youprefer analog would you prefer thedigital display it's obviously a littlebit harder to read because you're havingto kind of judge where the needle is butI have to say it is very accurate when Iwas testing with the temperature probeit is accurate to plus or minus one ortwo degrees Celsius so I was quiteimpressed with the accuracy of this livetemperature so you can see it that'sreally good the downside on it is thatas I said it doesn't let you set thetemperature and bring it to thattemperature one of the other things isyou kind of watching the temperature daygo up and when it hits 80 degrees youflip the switch to turn off it willagain overshoot the temperature by about7 or 8 degrees this guy is very verysimple - this one really nice becauseyou get a digital display of the livetemperature so in terms of livetemperature function this is probablythe best because you don't need a phoneyou can just see it immediately livetemperature function in digital displaybut it does overshoot as well and has anaccuracy tolerance of about 3 or 4degrees so not exactly accurate sothey're all different they all havetheir pluses and minuses it's up to youas to what which features you like thethe sound of and which features meanless to you okaymoving on to our Ganahl exceed we havebeen road-testing all of these kettlesto the max over the last few weeks we'vebeen doing a lot of gone throughsessions and we've gotten to know themquite well and it's fundamentallyimportant how the kettle feels theergonomics you know the pleasure that itgives you whilst you are brewing so oneof the key things for me is the pouringmechanism of the kettle how accurate iswhat the flow is like it may sound quitegeeky but all UT here to know that thepouring of the water is very veryimportant so we're going to show yousome close-ups of the pouring of thewater and we're going to start with theRussel and Hobbs now the Russell andhave poured pretty well it wascontrollable and you know accurate so itwas a decent pour that you could getfrom this kettle and we liked it quite alotthe I smarter 2.
0 this was probably theworst pouring mechanism the spout onthis is very very shortand I think what they've done is they'vesacrificed function for styling here itmay look very nice this this verydiscreet spout but it means that thepouring is not very accurate we foundthat it was either quite dribbly or toofast and it was a little bit frustratingthe sage the sage again had a spout thatwas a bit too short and so the pool wasnot too easy to control a little bitdribbly we didn't like it too much alsoI have to say this is a realHevy kettle so when it's filled withwater and you're pouring the the balanceof it just doesn't feel that right andand it's kind of hard to control the thepour of it so we felt that this was veryvery heavy too heavy and the pour wasnot great on it there cam drove by farwas the winner I wish that one of thesekettle manufacturers would make a kettlewith it longer spouts it may not look asgood stylistically and I know there arekettles out there with a longer spoutand as you can see the pour mechanism onthe cam Jove is flawless you couldcontrol it fast slow and it was veryvery accurate apart from the poor thekettles held up pretty wellthey have good ergonomics the handlesfeel all very very solid you know verygood grip they don't get a hot at all sothe handles are really nice as I said Ihave a problem with this one in terms ofits balance and its weight but apartfrom that you know that the handle isvery very goodthe smarter I like shame about the poorbut the ergonomics are nice and theruslan Hobbs I would say is probably thebest out of the bunch in terms ofbalance it's very lightweight so itdoesn't kind of you know weigh down inthe hand too much it had a decentcontrollable pour definitely the bestout of these three so I would say interms of ergonomics the Russell andHobbs winds okay finally let's talkabout their other features slimy let'smove on to the bells and whistles theextra features that these kettles haveand let's start with the Russell Hobbsbecause the this kettle has no extrafeatures it is what it is it's a goodkettle it has got a temperature gaugegood ergonomics good capacity fastheating it's a good kettle but it hasnothing extra hidden on itthe cam drove has this little extraspout this you can connect a tubeplastic tube that comes with the kettleand you can submerge the other end intobottled water that means that you canbasically install this at your desk andwhen your kettle is empty youyou open up the lid push the button andit will pump water and fill up thekettle and that actually is really quiteenjoyable you can sit there kit go andrefill your kettle without having to goto the kitchen they use this a lot inChina if you go to China you will tendto see you know installed kettles wherethey have big bottled water underneaththe desk and they're refilling if youdon't like water in plastic and youdon't want water going through plastictubes then obviously that's not for youbut it is a nice little feature but byfar the most feature Laden of thekettles in front of me are these twohere especially the sage tea maker andthis is really kind of its USP so we'lltalk about that last let's talk aboutthe I smarter as I said all of thefeatures here are hidden they're all onthe app on your phone so the app letsyou set the temperature within 1 degreeincrements it lets you see how muchwater is inside the kettle which issomething that's actually quite nice weused it a fair amount it also has a keepwarm function so you can keep thetemperature set at the level that youwant and it will hold the water at thattemperature so nice features but as Isaid before the feature that we likedthe most out of it is that you can brewfrom anywhere in other words you canswitch the kettle on wherever you areand I know that sounds quite trivial butit's something quite nice when you'relounging back enjoying tea or where youknow you're a little bit far away fromthe kettle invariably you have yourphone near you you just click start itmakes a nice little sound so you canhear that it's registered your commandand it starts to bring water up totemperature it's actually a really nicefeature and something that we weresurprised that we were using andenjoying quite a lot so lots of featuresin this kettle and all controlled withthe app this guy here has got lots andlots of features so let's talk about itas a kettle first it has customizabletemperature setting as I said it's got a60 minute keep warm function so it willhold the water or the tea if yourbrewing tea in this and we'll talk aboutthis in a second it's programmableyou can basically program it to startand stop when you want so you couldprogram it to start whilst you're stillin bed so it's ready for you when youwake up that obviously brings us to thisguy here so this is a big brewing basketand it has a really nice magnetic catchya really good quality magnetic catch andthat holds the waterI saw it holds the tea the dry tea leafabove the water level so you would bringthe water level maximum to about hereand then on the front you've got presetfor green black white blue long herbaland custom now I disagreed with theirsettings but that's because I'm a geekand I'm you know I have very veryparticular settings with my tea but thegreat thing about this tea maker is thatyou can set it yourself so you can setthe temperature you can set how long youwant the brewing basket to be in thewater and what happens is when the waterreaches the temperature that you've setit to then this brewing basket lowersinto the water and the tea starts toinfuse and as I said you can decide witha fair degree of flexibility how longthe brewing basket stays in the waterbefore it comes up so you're basicallycontrolling the steeping time so thatmeans that you brewing tea within thischamber and then the tea will stay warmat the temperature that you have set forit we test it out a little bitobviously we're gone through brewerswe're not going to be brewing in oneliter one and a half liters of water butwe tested it out it does work very wellI would say that it works better forteas that are not going to change tooquickly so I'd be looking at darker bluelong teas you know those kind of teasmay be priorities for this I wouldn't beusing it for green tea so much becauseof the fact that you know that the teais more reactive with the air andtherefore it's going to change muchquicker so you don't want to be brewinga liter of the tea but it does work wellthe keep warm function workswell it all works as it says it shouldbut clearly if you're going to Brewerthen you're not really going to be usingthat function but if you are kind of onthe go and you want to brew somewestern-style tea or you want to setyour tea leaves up and you want to wakeup to hot teaas soon as you wake up then you canprogram this to your heart's contentand it will be brewing tea for you thisis really the USP for this kettle thisis the unique selling point to thiskettle and why the price is a lot higherokay tea heads I think it's time that wemake some judgments we had used thesekettles that I said for the past fewweeks there are disadvantages andadvantages on each one to give you abrief rundown this is a very affordablekettle good temperature control notgreat because you can't set thetemperature a little bit tinny but goodcapacity and very fast heating with niceergonomics and a good pour this one herefeature laden nice and smart with thesmartphone application works very wellvery high capacity fast heating goodergonomics but the pour is a bit letdown it's worth saying at this pointthat this is version 2.
0 and I smarterare about to release a version 3 of thisI don't know what the version 3 is goingto be like but this is a 2.
0 so keep aneye out for the version 3 they may haveimproved the pour on it I don't knowthis one here the most feature laden youcan brew tea in it if you want that youdon't have to you can use it as astandalone kettle it works very well itbrings temperature accurately it's alittle bit slower but not too muchslower and has got a good capacity myonly gripe with it really is the weightand the pour is a bit bit cumbersome andfinally the little cam drove smallercapacity very slow at heating up thewater doesn't particularly have greatbuild quality doesn't have particularlygreat style but the pooron this is flawless the poor on this isexcellent excellent and is a reallyenjoyable way to make tea if you forcedme to make a decision because I hatereviews where people don't make adecision if you force me to choose akettle out of these four I would go forthe I smarter I think just overall interms of its the overall packagecapacity speed the looks the function Ithink that I can just about get over theshort spouts on it and I would go withthis one but you know what they're alldecent kettles and I have to say again abig thank you to the manufacturers thatkindly donated them for this review sowhich is your favorite let us know inthe comments section below you've heardwhat I think which one would you use themost which features do you think are themost important and do you want me to domore of these careful reviews because ifyou do I can reach out to the othermanufacturers out there to see what theycan provide to us and we can comparemore kettles that's it see you made atthe end of this video then please givethe video the thumbs up check out ouryoutube playlists and let us know ifthere any videos that you would like usto make if you're ever in London thencome visit us in Camden to say hi andtaste always if you have any questionsor comments then please fire them overother than that i'm Zonday from Malee'sthank you for being a part of therevelation of true tea stay away fromthe teabags keep drinking the good stuffand spread the word because nobodydeserves bad tea byeyou.
