Automatic Bullseye, MOVING DARTBOARD

I suck at Dart but I'm good atengineering which means I'm actuallyreally good at Dartmost of the projects built through myyoutube channel take a month or two topull off but I've been working on thisbeast with my former NASA coworker Johnfor over three freaking years and hereshe finally is it's fairlyself-explanatory but you throw a dartand as long as your initial throw issomewhere within this diameter so thedartboard helps out a little bit andwhat's cool is if you use this start itwill make you the world's best dartplayer because you get a bull's-eyenearly every time you if you don't isreally close but it is this start itmakes you the world's worst dart playerbecause it calculates the initialtrajectory and then moves the board inthe exact opposite direction eventuallywe took this thing to a bar to see if itwould work in the wild before we get tothat let's talk about how it actuallyworksfundamentally there are two main partsof the system first in this ml predictwhere a dart is going to land with atypical throw from regulation distanceand you have about 200 milliseconds todo that and then second need to somehowmove the board to that predictedlocation you have about another 200milliseconds to do that let's start withthe first part about how we predictwhere the darts going to land the realkicker here is that our dart has thesetiny retroreflectors on it and then wehave a bike on motion capture system ashumans we can see in 3d because we havetwo eyes and our brain it calculates thedifference between the two images andthen tells us how far or close thingsare this is why if you close one eye youinstantly lose that depth of perceptionthat's basically what we're doing hereexcept we have six eyes all around theroom and each of these eyes or camerascan take a 4k resolution picture 260times per second because it's hard todoodlee separate something so smallmoving so fast in front of a busybackground they actually use IR so theyblast out IR from all these IR LEDs andthen it hits the retroreflectors andthen bounces back to the lens thenaiways the dart run like this this iswhat you and I seebut the motion capture system just seesa solitary dart floating around one ofthe reasons and Sportacus so long tobuild that for the first year you'retrying to make our own motion capturesystem so we had our own cameras and oneof these awesome Nvidia tx1 boards whichis basically like a Raspberry Pi onRussian steroids which turns out that'sa super complex problem to solve and thevikon system was turnkey so that let mehave the XYZ position of the dart as we usethat to predict the final up-and-downposition of the board and then topredict the final left-right position tothe board we know from a bottom view adart will follow a linear path so we usego to y equals MX plus B and the yintercept or B in this case tells youhow far to move it left and right to thefinal positionOhnow we know exactly where to move let'stalk about how we actually do it theboard itself is on two linear sliderswhich allows us to translate anyspecific location so that provides thetrack on where to move but the enginewould be these six stepper motors youcan see from the front each motor has aspool and then some fishing line andthey all attach to the center of theback of the board right here once wehave the predicted bolt I saw thecomputer does the trigonometry and thatsense of commands over here to the motorso to move to the left it would say likeyou need to spin up but you need tounspin at the same rate on the back yousee the computer signal comes into thisarduino-compatible board here and thenyou got some preamps here that bump upthe voltage signal to the six individualstepper motor controllers and thesestepper motor drivers take the movinginstructions and combine it with thepower from the plug in the wall after gothrough this AC DC power converter andthen finally a bunch of voltage pulsesfrom the motor controller cause themotor to take small steps and eitherwind up or wind down now keep in mindall of this happening in less than halfa second and allows us to get our submillimeter precision in our boardpositioning oh and we don't just makeone guess on the final position of theboard we update and refine that yesanywhere from ten to a hundred timeswhich is why sometimes you sort of seethe board jitter into the final positionwe took it to a bar to see what peoplethoughtin general we found if you're reallydrunk you get so pumped at your newability if not slightly confused I usedto cook it dark no waste occurs but
