usb coffee warmer teardown

I found this thing kicking around at the office there's a bit of a cleanup goingon and somebody was tossing it out so I decided to grab it what it is is alittle USB powered cup warmer with presumably a little hub built into it soI figured I'd grab it and tear it apart but first let's just uh let's use all ofthis power supply here and just see how much it actually draws I don't want todraw down my computer so I got it set for 5 volts got current-limiting set wayup so on ok so right now just idling just these two and this LED lit strong14 milliamp so I'll turn it on and it's is that five hundred and thirty millionthat's not much actually I can actually feel it getting warm it always surprisesme when these you just be powered heating things really create heatbecause like like this you just be soldering iron that I got a while backthat was surprisingly the functional and this thing yeah it's so it's hot thereand over there not so much over here hmmobviously I'm not gonna put my drink on it because I don't want my beer to gethot hmm well let's so it does what it claims sweet to do let's see if we canactually get into it here obviously yeah the rubber feet by two little Phillipsscrews and there's two more in these front holes hereno surprise about that there's always mounting screws hidden under rubber feetor under labels it doesn't come apart with these four screws and theysuspected that bull black label there has something he'd known her to but thelabel says USB hub and warmer 4 port USB 1.

5 watts so no it was just over 500 milliamps so I guess that's legitcomes apart very easily and mushrooms okay those are teeny ones there's myteeny or tinier Philips screwdriver that do it without I'll do get in there whatare we seeing a bulb chip which is no doubt going to be the USB hub controllerhub yeah so here's the two LEDs on these two little arms two little square orrectangular LEDs okay so there's the back of the heating plate with a coupleof blobs of heatsink goo on it which are still nice and liquid see that kind ofSchmeer Schmeer okayso that's good that yes and what do we have on this side let's get you know alittle bit closer they're not that close so we have a couple of LEDs couple ofresistors which no doubt are in series to set LEDs capacitor in the middlewhat's it doing it looks like it's related somehow tothe USB controller Bob no 104 ceramic a capacitor and a DC 5 volt power inputjack our on/off switch and to the four portsfor the hub and then the business part here these two little heating elementswhatever they are hidden in in heat transfer goo and held up by these littleplastic thingies I have something to wipe the goo off those those are justresistors those are just little quarter watt resistors being tortured intoputting a heat well they are I'm gonna guess that with the switch off andnothing plugged in I should be able to measure the resistance across them theymight be in parallel but those are that once there's 9 ohms just see one of themon there which is Marcos ground huh you can't see that things there that'smarked as ground so I initially I thought that the keys of these shell ofthese was the no isn't okay so and then that's jumping yes so these tworesistors in parallel what did I see they were nine9 ohms for the pair of them parallelwhich means they're twice that 18 ohms so probably 20 ohms really so that'sthat's your heat source just tortured resistors interesting and goofy I don'tknow if I want to use it as a USB hub I certainly won't want that 500 milliampsbeing drawn out of my computer that's for sure hmm let's let's just disablethose two heating resistors and then we should be able to plug that into thecomputer you got some power showing on the LED turning that on actually is thatjust turning on the resistors it is oh okay so I didn't really have to disablethem this way you yeah where was I yeah I didn't really have to disable themthis way because that switch does it so that's powered into my computer now andwith that plugged into my computer and I'll plug in the USB memory stick thereand nothing happens over the computerputting it into a different port nothingnothing and nothing okay is there even any voltage is there even any voltagecoming out of these okay so they do function but probably the the USB hubcontroller is smacked oh well just to prove that this USB stick actually worksthere we go putting music off the USB stick so obviously that works okay wellthat was not too much going on inside there but interesting nonethelessof course as is the way with a lot of cheap electronics the interesting partis just hidden under a blob of epoxy that nobody can get into it's aninteresting cable it looks like it's actually shielded doesn't it it's reallyjust bit of foil inside there but now that I've got those resistors cut outlet's see what they are18:20 pending a high 19 yeah okay so that's pretty much what I guessed so acouple of 18 to 20 ohm resistors in parallel across the first straightacross the five volts there's your heating just heats a couple of spots onthere interesting little novelty it was a giveaway for to somebody in our officefrom should I promote them or not OTO net dot CA whoever they are if they evenstill exist well that was fun thanks for watching the pre sheet you check in themchecking in see what I'm up to in my shop if you have any comments orquestions down in the comment section I will talk to you later.
