Using a Toner to Identify Electrical Wires

Hi I'm Jeffrey Knight with Ewing irrigation and in this video I'm going to show youhow to use a toner to identify sprinkler wires.

I'm here with Dennis Hyde hardscape specialist with Ewing irrigation and Ibrought Dennis here mainly because if I can show Dennis how to identify wirethen anybody can do it.

So let's get this going.

All right Dennis here's thesituation.

.

.

there's been a lot of construction on this site and when we goback to the timer we're going to see that there's like 10 wires that havejust been cut and we don't know which wire is which.

I do know that this is a working valve so what we want to do is we want to tryto figure out which wire at the timer belongs to this valve.

And this is thethis is the hot wire this is the station wire to this valve but what I don't knowis which wire it belongs to at the clock.

And so Dennis is going to use a toner.

He's going to send a tone down this wire and then we're gonna use this amplifierright here to touch the wires at the clock and it will tell us which which ofthose wires belongs to this particular valve.

So go ahead Dennis.

What he's gothere is a toner.

You can pick this up at one of your local Ewing branches.

It's aStation Master Pro.

You take one lead and go to the field wire and the other leadis going to go to the to ground and for the ground he's just has a spike that hejust drove into the ground.

Have you ever done this before Dennis?I have once or twice.

All right, excellent.

Okay, so he's got it hooked up now he'sjust going to take the toggle switch and set it to tone and that's all there isto it.

Now this amplifier will pick up the tone going down this wireokay so the closer I get to it the brighter the light gets and the louderthe tone.

So when we get to the clock where there's 10, 12 wires, we're going totouch every wire and the wire that has the loudest tone and the brightest lightis the wire that goes to this valve.

Okay Dennis this is what I'm talking about.

Look at all this mess.

We've got ten twelve wires here.

If you don't have the right toolyou don't know which wire that we're looking for so you can take thattoner right there the receiver and you'll be able to touch the variouswires and here pretty soon we'll know which wire is the one we're looking for.

Touch this one again.

Okay now back to that one.

Okay so you feel prettyconfident that's the one? Okay so you can see a difficult repair was donepretty easily because we had the right tool for the job I'm Jeffery Knight andI'll see you soon with another irrigation video.
